Turning into a bookworm

Currently reading ‘Fountainhead’ by Ayn Rand. The book came highly recommened and I decided to give it a go. So, yes’day night I started reading this book, and was so engrossed that I lost count of time. By the time I slept, it was already about 4 am. As a result, woke up at 10 in the morning and came late to office. ;)

BTW, I have decided that, instead of watching TV and lazing around at home for next 1.5-2 months, it would be much better if I finish off these books:

  • The Art of War - Sun Tzu
  • First, Break all the rules - Marcus Buckingham
  • My Years at General Motors - Alfred Sloan Jr.
  • Time to Kill - John Grisham
  • The Firm - John Grisham
  • Serious Play - Michael Schrage
  • Unlimited Power - Anthony Robbins
  • Brief History of Time - Stephen Hawking
  • The Day of the Jackal - Frederick Forsyth
  • English August - Upmanyu Chaterjee

And, yes… need to add Calvin to the list as well. How can I miss that cute monster? :)

[Prasad] Yeah, the list is long, ‘coz I won’t have anything to do after I leave my job this month end. So, its always better to kill time by reading some good books.

its always great to read! Always better than watching TV. Do let us know which one was your fav.

Grisham is a good writer…but now my new fav. is Dan Brown. Me still reading Da Vinci Code

well since you are off to IITB for a MBA, i have a suggestion for you, if you get time try these, “What They Don’t Teach You At Harvard Business School”, by Mark H. McCormack and its sequel “What They Still Don’t Teach You At Harvard Business School”

really great books.

Also if possible try “Art of the Deal” by Donald Trump (am currently reading it).

The Fountainhead is a fantastic book. It’s not too well written, but the concepts Ayn Rand puts forth are worth considering. The book can also have a negative effect sometimes, since the central character is so self-centered. But it’s all about what to pick up from the book, and what not to…

I’ve read all four Dan Brown books. Angels & Demons wins hands down.

Sudeep / May 25th, 2005, 7:57 am / #

[Poonam] You still haven’t completed Da Vinci Code? BTW, which other Dan Brown books u’ve read?

[Mayank] I have already read ‘what they don’t teach you at harward…’.. nice book..

But, haven’t able to get my hands on the other two.. will check them out!! :)

Manpreet / May 25th, 2005, 10:31 am / #

[Sudeep] Ayn Rand really writes very well. The way she shaped the character of Howard Roark is amazing! Ya, the book can have -ve effect, but I guess the +ves out weigh the -ves by long way!

As for Dan Bown, I have just read his Digital Fortress and Da Vinci Code. Enjoyed ‘em!

FountainHead is one great book. I agree, reading books is always better than watching TV, or lazing around. I used to read Grisham’s book, but now I am purely into non-fiction stuff. ‘The Firm’ is a good one.

mannat / May 25th, 2005, 5:14 pm / #

[Mannat] It’s an awesome book..!!

BTW, you into non-fiction? wot kind of books do u read?

Manpreet / May 25th, 2005, 5:32 pm / #

Book reading is a very good habit. Keep it up!!.

So you will be busy reading books at home for the coming two months. Enjoy. :)

Govind / May 25th, 2005, 7:30 pm / #

Arre yaar..main jab travel karti thi..toh airports par..plane par..sab jagah padti thi..par ab ghar aake time hi nahi milta..but I shall finish soon.

First Dan Brown book I read was Digital Fortress It was right down my alley as it was about IT security. Great book.

Poonam / May 25th, 2005, 8:12 pm / #

Oh yes, she portrayed Howard Roark brilliantly, as well as the architectural details. I somehow felt though, that her grammar wasn’t the best. But as long as the point is put forth such that everyone can understand…

Sudeep / May 25th, 2005, 8:39 pm / #

Manpreet, it’s been almost 2 yrs now since I started reading non-fiction, and believe me, it’s a lot more fun. I could read anything. I finished reading ‘The Deadly Game’ last week (it’s about Laci Peterson). I usually grab a book about anything and everything that has made a headline-in other words, anything written on current events. Also, being an MBA, and being into Marketing, I love reading Kotler’s books.

mannat / May 26th, 2005, 4:27 am / #

[Govind] Dunno how I’m gonna actually spend my next 2 months. There are lot of plans right now - like going for a long trip etc, but let see how many really materialize. If nothing goes according to plan, then books hain na? :)

[Poonam] Yup, Digital Fortress is a nice book! Since we are in this field, we could actually relate to it a lot.

[Mannat] Deadly game!! Laci Peterson - sorry for my ignorance, but who is this person?

U are an MBA? Never told abt it before? BTW, I will be reading kotler in my first year.. dekhte hain.. howz it? :) Nahin samajh aayi.. to will get back to u!! :p

Manpreet / May 26th, 2005, 5:43 pm / #

Don’t worry about your ignorance…I am sure most of the ppl in India would not know about this case…but looks like u have not been reading my blog…I did make a post on this story
Yes, I am in MBA in Marketing-graduated in 2003. I am sure you would love Kotler. He is much more interesting that Peter Drucker.

mannat / May 26th, 2005, 5:51 pm / #

Now who is Peter Druker? :P

Manpreet / May 26th, 2005, 5:55 pm / #

Peter Drucker is the management guy. I am sure you will read about him in your management classes.
Don’t worry…in a yr or so, you will know about all these ppl….MBA makes even a techie person smart …don’t kill me people.

mannat / May 26th, 2005, 6:24 pm / #

Manpreet / May 26th, 2005, 6:29 pm / #

Kunal / May 26th, 2005, 6:47 pm / #

mannat / May 26th, 2005, 6:49 pm / #

[Mannat] Haha.. yeah.. lets see when does this transition happens? :p

[Poonam] I will let u know… if i do get some $$$ from google.com :)

Manpreet / May 27th, 2005, 12:38 pm / #

lol google ads yeah they cool.. coz they contextually related .. they send a check when its more then 100$

google doesn’t disclose how much it pays.. so the earning different u may get 10$ for a one click ..sometimes or u may even get 20 click and still earl 0.50 $ lol

but people don’t blog to earn money … so in usually blog topic the keyword displayed are usually low earning….
