A week in Mumbai

It’s been a week since I landed here in Mumbai, and joined IITB. So far, it has been very hectic to say the least. No… not because of the academic reasons!

My parents had came along with me here for a 4 days. And, during those 4 days, we just about visited each and every major corner of the city - Juhu beach, InOrbits, R-Mall, Hiranandani, Gandhi Market, Vashi, Bandra, Bandstand, Lokhandwala, Marine Drive, Chembur, Colaba Market, and yeah, the Gateway of India. And, since I have landed here, not a day has passed during on which it hasn’t rained.

Talking about rains, yes’day it rained about 40 inches in a single day. Some people are saying its a world record!! This brought the lifeline of Mumbai - the local trains on a standstill. The cellphone networks were jammed. There was waist high water everywhere in the city. The airports were closed down. All the flights had to be diverted to Delhi or other cities. People are stuck in their offices for the past 30 hours!! O boy, could this go any worse?

My hostel is about 2 kms away from the main gate, and is very, very near to the Powai lake. As a result of yes’days downpour, even our mess which is in the basement was flooded with water. So, there were no evening snacks, no dinner yes’day… no breakfast, no lunch today!! So, we guys had to fish for other sources to do some pet pooja!! Never thought, Mumbai rains can be like this!! Coming from a dry regions of North India, to me this was an experience - good or bad.. i don’t know!! I talked to one of the professors here who has been staying inside the campus for the past 23 years. He told me that he has never seen water-logging inside the campus ever before!! This was the first time.

But now, as I write this, things have improved. Rains have stopped, and Mumbai is returning back to normalcy.

As far as the academics are concerned, the class schedule is pretty cool - from 8.30 in the morning to 12.30 in the afternoon. Yeah.. just 4 hours a day! Have got just one assignement so far. Let’s see how it goes from now on. Seniors keep on dreading us that tougher days will be here soon. My policy is to just wait and watch :)

All the best with classes! Now you will soon see why Mumbai is the greatest city! I am glad to hear that you are doing well!

I read about this rain from Poonam’s blog before, it was really bad rainfall …. but it actually happened in Jakarta as well. For Jakarta, don’t need to have rain for few days, only for one day, it will be flood everywhere. I was stuck on the road for 7 hours because of flood last time.

Wish you the best with your study
