Vodafone to launch iPhone in India - Comparison of iPhone vs Nokia N95 vs Sony Erricson P1i vs HTC Dual Touch

Posted by Manpreet on May 7th, 2008

So, the news if finally out. Vodafone is going to launch the much awaited iPhone in India in the last quarter of 2008.

But, is iPhone worth this long wait?

Lets just compare iPhone features with the existing high-end phones in India - Nokia N95, Sony Ericsson P1i and HTC Dual Touch.

phone comparison

So, its clear, apart from the coolness factor, there’s nothing much to offer from Apple.

I still can’t see what the iPhone hype is all about. I agree that it’s beautiful and has a big screen, but that’s about it. So what if it has a touchscreen, am I the only one who would rather have standard buttons than a touchscreen? I sometimes send sms’es while on the move, and its real tough in my opinion to operate a touchscreen enabled phone when you are in a moving car. I also infact like to feel when I press something. Also, having physical buttons makes it so much simpler to use the keys without actually looking at them.

Moreover, iPhone doesn’t have GPS, have a poor cam, is delicate to handle (with its large screen, it is prone to scratches) and is quite big to fit in my trousers/jeans pocket easily.

So, all in all, I will prefer the likes of N95s and P1is over iPhone anyday, unless Apple comes out with killer features in iPhone v2.0. Lets wait and watch!

Update:
Vodafone has finally released their iPhone pricing details. The 8GB model would cost around Rs.15960 and the 16GB model would cost around Rs.19960, both available only on exclusive 2 year contract with Vodafone. No exact details about the launch dates are available as of now. (via The Mobile Weblog)

Manpreet, I couldnt agree more with you. I’ve been meaning to write an article on the Iphone in a long time, but it never really happened.

Okay, my first impression was that its a really cool device. When you actually play with it, you like it. But for how long? Its very easy to zoom in/out pictures, very easy to goto the next pic.

All said and done, nothing extra ordinary when it comes to the techie features. Infact I’d say my E61 can do most of the things that an iPhone does. So big deal !!! Just over hyped!

Monty: Yes, when it comes to phones - there are very few companies that can beat Nokia. E61 is a fantastic device at the price it comes for.

I own a N95 and my friend has an unlocked iPhone. And, believe me, he hates his device, and regrets having spend 30 grands just for the looks!

Lemme know if he wishes to sell his phone.

Monty: Ok. Boss! :)

Great post and comparison :)

The iPhone in India does not have GPS? The iPhone in USA does. Interesting. Hmm…camera quality.. its really not that bad at all…definitely not comparable to the 5 that you get on the N95 - but if you take decent pics.. you can’t tell when you upload the photos to the Internet (I can show you if you don’t believe me  ). In general, I hate Apple. I hate everything they make… other than the iPhone. There are so many features that are extremely easier to do rather than to do in any other device, including my Nokia N series. The biggest thing that we use it for is the calendar/to do feature. It is so much easier & quicker to use a “keyboard” rather than trying to click on 7 three times to get a letter. There are things that I like my Nokia for, one is the loudspeaker. iPhone louspeaker is not loud enough. One of the smart things that Apple has done is open it up to developers. There have been some very interesting apps that have been made for FREE - and that means your iPhone won’t go obsolete. Even though there is already talk that they are coming out with a newer model to replace the iPhone as soon as June this year.
